Message from the President Dear Fellow Residents,
Since my last report to you, we joined with Epping Civic Trust to hold a
“Meet the Candidates” evening for Parramatta Council and held our own
“Meet the Candidates” event for the candidates in Ward C Hornsby.
It was exciting to have most of the candidates for both the Councillor
and (in the case of Hornsby) Mayoral positions to speak and answering
questions from the floor. There was an especially good attendance for
the Parramatta Council meeting. With vacancies for the position of Mayor
and two of the three councillors in Ward C Hornsby, please remember to
vote on Saturday 14 September.
We will also hold a “Meet the Candidates” event for the by-election in
the State parliamentary seat of Epping. This is advertised elsewhere. It
will happen on Thursday 26 September. Again, the seat will be vacant
following the resignation of the Hon Dominic Perrottet. It is
important to see and hear the candidates standing for this election.
Once the by-election results are announced and new road surfacing on the
M2 is completed, we will assess if there has been a significant enough
change in noise from the M2 – before deciding to resume our advocacy
about that concern.
Spring time has come with gorgeous flowers across our suburbs. With the
funds donated to the Civic Trust for the planter boxes, we have used the
unspent funds on refreshing the planter boxes in Hannah Street.
We have needed to cope with a number of black outs. These are not
unexpected with falling branches in strong winds and did lead to my
talking to lots of neighbours all out and about in the Village Arcade on
one Monday night when there was no power. It was almost like a street
party!
Louise and I have started working through a bundle of murder mysteries
that came our way (thanks Ian & Rose) and one of them was “Black
River” by Matthew Spencer. It was quite a pacey read about Prince Albert
College, a large private boy’s school set near Pennant Hills.
Some of the characters lived in Beecroft of all places. The novel
describes their homes as being Federation and dark brick – which we know
from the Beecroft Cheltenham History Group web site is because a number
of homes, especially in Cheltenham, are noted for being built with
bricks from the Thornleigh brickworks. Published in 2022, this is a good
local read.
While murder mysteries are not always high culture, I do look forward to
seeing many of you at the next performance of the Beecroft Orchestra on
22 September. What a treat these performances have been.
Meet the Candidates NSW State Government The
Beecroft Cheltenham Civic Trust will be holding a "Meet the Candidates"
for the upcoming State elections on Thursday 26th September at the
Beecroft Presbyterian Church Hall, Welham St. Beecroft, 7.15pm for a
7.30pm start.
Civic Trust Spring Walk in October The Trust will be holding a Spring Walk on Sunday afternoon the 13th October.
The walk will once again be in Beecroft and Cheltenham and will explore that which makes our suburbs so special.
The Walk this Spring will follow Walk 12 in the Beecroft Cheltenham History Walks Book (Edition 2).
The walk will start at 2pm in the eastern carpark at Cheltenham Railway Station, facing Sutherland Road.
The walk will be circular in nature and finish back at the station around 4pm, an easy 2 hour walk with short talks on the way.
One should wear suitable attire for outdoor walking such as hat, sturdy walking shoes, water, and sun protection.
We will be entering Lane Cove National Park so dogs are not allowed. The
degree of difficulty of walking is moderate as we will be following a
fire trail and a bush track. Expect a short rest and talk at Ahimsa, the
National Trust property that was the home of Marie Byles.
The walk will be led by Ross Walker and Sheila Woods.
Numbers are not restricted. All are welcome.
Any questions contact Ross Walker on 0412 257 556.
Beecroft Orchestra’s next concert for 2024 will be "Concert Three", "Brandman,Lobbia, Sibelius”
